Final Fall Semester Grades!

Here is a link to the Final Fall Semester Rubric. Make sure you have written enough book reviews. Also, I notices the websites are created but there is very little content. Please ask for guidance if you are uncertain about what to share on your site. Also, link lists are outdated and there are some problems navigating from your blog to your website and back. I can see that students have not been posting to their blogs or commenting on other students posts. You can not go back and write a bunch of back posts. Please just post a little something twice a week until Christmas Break. Don't forget your research report. I will check for it on your website. I will also check to make sure you have links to your assignments on your website. Please continue to clean the library and maintain your shelves on a daily bases. If you need clarification, that is what I am here for!

Superintendent Deasy does a 360 an supports libraries!

False hope???? Deasy claims that TL's positions will be restored! Patt Morrison Show Public Radio KPCC

I would like to think that the social networking efforts, letter writing and advocacy campaigns of librarians all over the country had something to do with his public support. Now let's see whether or not his actions back his words!

Assignment # 32 Open Letter to the School Board

Dear Mr. Deasy and School Board Members;

It is imperative that the board votes to centrally fund lausd school libraries immediately! This is not a political issue yet it has become one. My school site is top heavy with administrators yet you claim their is no $$$$$ for a teacher librarian. I know otherwise. It is merely a question of priorities. Since you are all educated people you must understand the importance of cultivating a culture of reading at a school site. This is particularly essential at those sites with a demographic of students living in poverty, with a high % of language learners and with no access to book stores in their communities. There is ample evidence to suggest that the single contributing factor to raising test scores on standardized tests is providing students with access to interesting and varied reading material. I have added more media links to the list Melinda Buterbaugh, our spokesperson has sent you. I have personally informed Tom Torlakson, one of the creaters of the model School Library Standards of the lack of support for school libraries here at LAUSD. He will be receiving copies of hearing transcripts along with Governor Brown and the State Board of Education. I am hoping they will all agree that the lack of central funding for libraries is unacceptable. Many of my students and parents will be filing Williams Complaints. We are also expecting mandated inclusion of school libraries and digital literacy standards into the curriculum framework. By joining us (LASLA) in supporting school libraries you can look like champions rather than villains. Do the right thing and restore funding immediately!

People who really know about education know that a strong school library is key to student achievement. I hope that you will rescind the RIFs of teacher librarians and do your duty to the school children of this district by restoring funding of all library staff positions

New Boots Slideshow!

Yesterday I promised pictures! Above is a slide show of Sparky and his new boots. The first picture is of Shawnee (brown and white paint mare)keeping Sparky company because it is too painful for him to stand up. Something interesting about horses: they are prey animals, not predators like us. When a member of a predator pack is injured the others kill or abandon them. When a member of a horse herd is injured the horses surround and protect. So, if you were wounded and lying on the ground, a horse would not bite or kick you but protect you. The second picture shows Sparky's life saving Orthotic gel boots by Soft-Ride. They allow him to stand with painful feet and heal the damaged ligaments by restoring circulation. The feet as well as the heart are organs that pump blood in hoofed mammals. I also included a photo of Sparky's Mustang "Freeze Brand" courtesy of the BLM (Bureau of Land Management). Basically, it is a bunch of arrows pointing to the numbers of a clock. = is 0 and // is 1. It is easier to burn arrows than numbers. Also, you will see a picture of Belinda driving my favorite work horse, a Kubota 7100 B hist tractor. Lastly, you will see Marie on "Shorty", another rescued mustang posing before a flooded Hansen Dam river feed. It is too flooded to cross and there is lots of dangerous Quicksand.

Assignment # 19 Books U Read Over Break

Please write a review on Shelfari of a book u read over break.

Assignment # 18 Happy New Year to You All.

Hey Student Librarians. Welcome Back. Please write about something interesting you did over the break. Here's what happened to me: On New Years Day I went to pick up my 92 year old mother and her caregiver to take her to see her 90 year old sister in San Diego. When I went to leave, the car wouldn't start. It turned out to be U guessed it a dead battery. On that same New Year's Day my horse Sparky(of Sparky's Retreat Mustang Rescue) had a laminitic episode. I have been playing nurse to him for the past 10 days. Laminitis in inflammation of the ligaments that hold the coffin bone in the hoof. It is extremely painfully and can be a death sentence to a horse that relies on his feet to stand most of his life. I purchased special orthopedic boots. I give him a messy paste mix of pain pills twice a day through a syringe in his mouth. You'll notice it all over my clothes from time to time. I will post a picture of him tomorrow! ; ( Hope your break was happier than mine!
